Prayer Chains To Heaven
As a child of God, one of our greatest privileges is that of prayer. Having spent time in Japan and seeing the people praying to their idols of worship, makes me appreciate what we have even more. God tells us that we can come to the Throne of Grace, knowing that He is ready to hear and answer our prayers according to His will and in His time. What peace there is in knowing our God is anxiously waiting to hear our petition. There is another privilege that God blesses us with. It that the opportunity to pray for someone else in intercessory prayer. Paul instructs us that we are to "bear one an other's burdens" and one way of doing that is to pray with them in their time of need. We have at our church, as most churches do, a prayer chain. Several women are ready to receive special prayer request and lift them to the throne of God. It is amazing just how much peace and contentment it brings to those in need. I received a call the other day and the request was of such urgency that I not only called our prayer chain, but also at least 5 other people from 5 other churches so they in turn could pass the request along to their people. Then I sent out an email to many pastors in the state to make them aware of the situation. In a matter of moments, not hours, we had hundreds of people praying. Here is my point. These prayer chains are of utmost importance in the local churches. If you have a need, call on them. If you get a call, take it serious and spend time in prayer concerning the matter. You may not know any of the details, but the person in need does, and so does our God. Use that prayer chain to heaven.

It Just Seems Right To Me
Psa 119:9 "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse he ways? By taking heed thereto according to Thy Word."
I was just reading an email and it had a story in it that was so funny, because it could be true. As the story goes there were two young ladies sitting outside one evening enjoying the beauty of the stars and the moon in a clear sky over Oklahoma. One young lady turned to the other and asked "which do you think is further, Florida or the moon"? With not so much as a hesitation the other responded "well, duh, can you see Florida"? It seemed only logical to her that since she could see the moon then it must be closer. Solomon knew of this hundreds of years ago when he wrote, "there is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof is the way of death". Prov 14:12 We are prone to look at things without ever really considering all the facts and make our own determination. For instance, when it comes to the matter of Salvation and going to Heaven, man has the idea that because God is a God of love, then certainly, He would not send anyone to Hell. I mean it just makes sense. But, the fact of the matter is that some will go to hell even though God loved them enough to send His only Begotten Son to die for them. Others, will rationalize that if I do more good than I do bad, then the good will out weigh the bad and God will take me to Heaven. But, again, the fact is that our goodness is nothing more that filthy rags compared to the righteousness of Holy God. Once again, it seems right, but the end is death. So, what do we need to do? It is very simple. Go to God's Word and find our instructions there. Then just do what God says and all will be fine. Now, that seems right to me.

Pros And Cons Of Modern Technology
Rom 6:1 "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that Grace my abound?"
I would be the first to admit that I really enjoy the modern technology. I remember several years ago when I took typing in High School. Believe it or not, it was on a manual typewriter that didn't even have the letters on the keys. I actually became fairly good at typing and spent many hour at the keyboard during college and even in the military. Ah, but now, we have modern technology with the variety of work processing programs. Has it made my life easier? By all means!. But, I have also noticed a downside to it. By using my computer, my mistakes are so easily corrected. Some may ask "why is that a downside"? Because the ease of correction makes me sloppy and careless. I can speed along and even if I don't catch my mistake at the time, I can always use spell check and it can tell me just how careless I really was. I enjoy that feature, but to be honest, it is rather frustrating sometimes because I have made so many mistakes. Hum, it sounds like there should be a message in there somewhere. Ah, yes, here it is. When a person receives Christ as his Lord and Savior, his sins are forgiven and nothing can cause him to stand before God in eternal condemnation. He still has a sin nature and is prone to sin as a result. As a new Christian, we usually are more sensitive to our sin and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, because we are really trying to live a separated life, free from sin. But, as time goes on, we realize that as we sin, I John 1:9 tells us that when we confess that sin, He is faithful to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So, we become more lax in our attempt a living righteously, because it is so easy to make things right. Here is the problem with that idea. To confess means to "agree with God that what we have done is a sin". Okay, so what does that mean? Glad you asked. It means that when I confess my sin, I am saying to God that I really don't want to do that any more. So, I guess when I sit down at my computer and when I live my life, I really do need to try not to make mistakes.

Life Is A Bed Of Roses
Psa 24:1 "The Earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell thterein."
That has always been an interesting statement to me. It, like so many other cliches, stops just a little too short of reality. Now, if they had said that life is like a bed of rose pedals, that would make much more sense to me. After all, rose pedals are fragrant, beautiful and very soft. On the other hand, a rose, though fragrant, beautiful and very soft, is also on a stem that is hard and filled with thorns. Thorns that will prick your fingers and cause bleeding, and in some cases, leave a scar. Let's take a look at another saying that we are familiar with - "life is like a rose garden". Ah, now we are getting closer. When you approach a rose garden from a distance, it is a very beautiful place. And, as you get closer you begin to smell the sweet aroma that accompanies that beauty. Now, you are there, in the garden, and desire to partake of a single rose (like partaking of a single day in life). You can just reach out haphazardly and grab it, or you can, with great care, look for the thorns and cautiously place your fingers so that they do not get stuck. Honestly, you can pick a rose either way. But, it seems to me that one way is far more enjoyable than the other. Unfortunately, too many people approach life with the same reckless abandonment and wonder why they find themselves bleeding and scarred. Solomon said "there is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Prov 14:12 There is also a way that is right for man - God's way - and it brings life. Go ahead, pick a rose and enjoy life.

What Wilt Thou Have Me To Do?
Isa 6:8 "Also, I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send and who will go for us? Then said, here am I; send me!"
The Apostle Paul made this statement at his conversion on the road to Damascus. We often look back at that statement and think of how powerful it really was. The implication is that he was willing to do anything that God asked of him. Was that the truth? I think it was. Because we see that Paul (Saul at the time) was already serving God - or he thought that he was. At least he was trying to. Now, he truly knows God, personally, as Lord and Savior. Jesus is now his Messiah and his desire is serve him the rest of his days. Can you just imagine what this world would be like if every Christian had that same attitude? "Here I am Lord, in Church today, ready to get my marching orders for the days ahead." But, in reality, only a small number of those professing to believe in Christ are actually concerned with God's will for their life. They have established themselves in a career, with a family and obligations. They already have their life planned out as to what will make them happy and secure. Even if they are willing to ask God what He would like for them to do, they usually have restrictions placed there to safeguard them. "Lord, I'll do this, but You know I can't get involved in this because those times are already taken up". When you look at the life of Paul and all that he went through, it is not a desirable life. But, that is what God had for Paul, not you. Paul was very content to serve God and to suffer for God. And God blessed him for that. If you can be content with God's will for you, He will bless you as well. Go ahead, give it a try. You'll be glad that you did.

Our Changing Perspecitve On Life
Ecc 3:1 "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."
Isn't it amazing how our outlook on life changes as the years go by? I remember when I was just a kid in school and looked at my teachers who were "so old". I couldn't wait to get out of school so I could be out on my own. My whole life was before me and the thought of it coming to a close never entered my mind. That seems like only yesterday and yet it was over 40 years ago. Remember those "old people" from before? Well, I am one. James tells us in James 4:14 that life is just a vapor. It quickly comes and quickly goes. How much time do I have left on this earth before God sees fit to take home? That is strictly up to God - He knows and I don't. But, one this is certain, I spend more time thinking about the past in my life than I do about the future here on earth. If I am not careful, I will find myself thinking about what could have been and what I should have done differently. Instead, I need to consider what I can still do, and what I need to do differently in my future. Before, I thought I had lots of time so I can do that at another time. Now, I realize that today isn't just the first day of the rest of my life, it could be the last day. What I can do, I must do. Some of you who will read this will say, "well, I am in the early stages of life, so I do have plenty of time. But, the reality of the matter is that Jesus could come for us "TODAY" and we are going - whether young of old. So, what is your perspective on life?

Being Faithful To A Faithful God
Eph 1:1 "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:"
We know that the Bible says we are to live by faith. But, sometimes we are a little one sided in our thoughts about the subject. We only think of living by faith and trusting God for the unknown things in life. Of course, we mean unknown to us, but known to God. There is also the idea of being faithful to God in living by faith. What do we mean by faithful? Well, I guess in this situation, it would be consistent. Here is our problem. We find that we need God for something in life and we are reminded that in order to receive it from Him, it takes a step of faith on our part. We take that step, believing, and sure enough, God answers. Just, as He said He would do. He is Faithful! Now that we have our need met, we go on about our lives, business as usual, until such time as we need Him again. What God is looking for is a consistency in our walk of faith. A trusting Him everyday for every situation. To do that gives us a constant flow of joy and peace in life that the world cannot understand, nor provide. Often times, when we think of being unfaithful, our minds go to an immoral application where a person cheats on their spouse with someone else. In James 4:4 we see where God calls those who have a friendship with the world adulterers and adulteresses. Because they have turned to the world rather than to Him. I want to encourage you today to set your sights on being faithful every day, to your faithful God.

Promises Promises
Luke 6:38 - "Give and it shall be given unto you..."
God's promises are a thrilling part of scripture. They are so wonderful that Peter describes them as "exceeding, great and precious promises" in II Peter 1:4. Since they are so wonderful, why is it that we so seldom trust in these promises? I heard a story years ago that illustrates this very well. It seems that a new pastor had moved into the area and was visiting all of the members of his Church. He had come to visit one of the shut ins, who was a Godly woman of some years. As he arrived, she asked if he would like some coffee, to which he accepted. While she was in the kitchen, he began to thumb through her worn old Bible. Quickly, he notice notations throughout that read T&P. When she came back, he asked the meaning of these strange notes in the margins of her Bible. With a broad smile she said, "If you notice, they are beside the promises of God, and the T&P simply stands for tried and proven". Over the years, she had learned that if God made her a promise, He was going to keep it. So, as the needs arised and God showed her a promise, she would put her trust in that promise and watch God go to work. We began with such a promise. It is usually associated with money, but the principal applies to anything. If you give your time to God, He will bless and you will have more time. If you give your talents to God, He will bless those talents. By the way, it is amazing how many times God reveals a promise to us, just before we need it to trust in. But, we have to get into the Word of God to find them. I want to encourage you to search out these exceeding great and precious promises and watch God go to work.

Get The Point?
James 4:7 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. resis the devil, and he will flee from you."
I love the Olympics, especially the Summer Games. One of the things that I really enjoy is the opportunity to watch sporting events that I don't normally get a chance to see. One such event is fencing. I have never understood why they call it fencing since I have yet to see one of them come out with post hole diggers, but I guess that is another sport. What intrigues me about fencing is how different the real thing is to the Hollywood version that we see in the swashbucklers on the big screen. There they can go on for 20 minutes, while climbing all over the place and no one gets hurt. Not so in the Summer Games. If you so much as bat an eye, you could miss the match. In a matter of a split second, someone gets the point, if you get my point. Sometimes it is like that in the Christian walk of faith. We are going along fine with all of the confidence in the world and out of the clear blue Satan attacks and down we go. We may think we are on guard, but ever so quickly we have been struck. Sometimes it is but a glancing blow and we are able to defend ourselves using the shield of Faith and the Sword of the Word of God. Then, there are the times when we find ourselves unarmed and are struck a mighty blow.
We need not be afraid of Satan, because we have the promise that "greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world". I John 4:4. But, we do need to be ever mindful of the fact that the devil is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. (I Peter 5:8) With that in mind, let me encourage you to get the point, lest you "get the point".

You Want Me To Do What?
Acts 9:6 "...Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?..."
As you read the pages of the Bible it becomes increasingly evident that people were different back then than they are today. Too often, we think of our Bible heroes as super beings with super powers - you know, faster than a speeding bullet kind of thing. But the reality is they were just flesh and bone, like you and me. So, what made the difference in them being able to do what appears to be an impossibility? Some might say, that they lived in a different time and the sins of the world today are greater than ever before. But, then you have to consider Noah who lived in such a wicked time that God said He was going to bring judgement upon the whole earth. Often, we think of the tremendous task that Noah faced in building the Ark. Can you imagine what must have been going through his mind when God spoke to him and began to give him the dimensions of the Ark? He may very well have said "You want me to do what?" And then for him to stay with the project for 120 years is just mind boggling. If we don't see results in 24 hrs we are ready to pack it in. Having said all of that, let me remind you of a greater work that God called Noah to do. Gen 6:8-9 tells us that Noah found Grace in the eyes of the Lord because he was a just man and walked with God. In these 2 verses lies the core of the greater work, which was to live righteously in an unrighteous world. God knew that Noah could build an Ark, because God knew Noah could build a life that was pleasing unto him. No matter what God has called you to do in service for Him it all begins with a righteous life and walking with Him.

Ignorance Isn't Really Bliss
Rom 1:13 "Now, I would not have you ignorant, brethren..."
I don't know who came up with that statement, but it has caused many people to become complacent and not seek for the answers. Some people like to apply that to potential tragic situation, such as "I am happy not knowing that I have cancer." But, in reality, knowledge is bliss, rather than ignorance. With knowledge comes the ability to face the situation and deal with it in a logical and productive manner. Knowledge also brings hope and faith. Romans 10:17 tells us the "faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God". The more that we get into God's Holy Word, the more that we learn about Him. The more that we know about Him the more that we can see how He wants to be involved in our lives and how He can do marvelous things to take care of us. Ephesians 2:12 reminds us that before we were saved we were without God in this world and had no hope. Sadly, there are Christians today that face seemingly incurable diseases and feel hopeless because they are now aware that our God is the Great Physician. There are those who have lost their jobs that are in despair because they don't realize that God said He would supply our every need. Where is the bliss in that ignorance? So, take some time out of your busy schedule and learn about God. You will be glad that you did.
Let's Compare the Church And Computers
Heb 10:25 "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is..."
I am so amazed at computers. I can remember when I first began to use them and stood in awe at what they could do. But, today, the computer can do things that I don't even know about. Things that could make my everyday life so much more simple - if I just knew how to use it. In the last 25 yrs, I have learned to do more with my computer, but it is still primarily for office, study and communication use. With all of the advancements, I still only do a very small portion of what my computer is capable of doing. And, it will only do what I tell it to do. Okay, you are wondering what is the connection between the computer and the Church. Well, just like I am missing out on all that the computer can do for me, so are most Church members today. They have one application - Sunday morning worship service. But, there is so much more that can benefit your life that is going untapped. For example, what about Sunday School? At 9:45 AM you can come and be taught more of what the Bible has to say and how it applies to your life. Weds. nights are a great time to come and share your burdens one with another as we collectively bring our petitions before the Throne of Grace. Or, you could get involved in the ministry of the Church by singing in the choir, or teaching a class or going out on visitation or whatever God leads you to do. Just like there is a whole lot more to my computer, there is so much more to your Church. And those who are the most productive are those who get the most use out of what they have. Is that you?

Say What?
Gen 1:1 "In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth."
Little Johnny came home from Sunday School and dad asked him what he had learned. He said "dad, it was a really exciting story of how Moses was leading the people away from Egypt and Pharaoh got mad and began to chase them. Moses was stuck on the side of a river with no place to go, so they chopped down a bunch of trees and make a whole lot of boats for the people to cross over on. This made Pharaoh rally mad and he began to shoot at them with these big guns and..." About that time his father interrupted him and asked "Johnny, is that really the way that you learned this story?" Little Johnny thought for a moment and said "no dad it isn't". "But, if I told it they way they did, you wouldn't believe that either". Sometimes, I guess we do find stories in the Bible rather hard to believe, but then again they are accomplished by God and not man. Usually what happens when we come face to face with a situation like that we do try to change it so as to make it more believable. Take, for instance, Creation. Man just can't wrap his brain around the fact that God Almighty spoke this world into existence approximately 6000 years ago, so they logically come to the conclusion that it had to have evolved over billions of years. That is where faith comes into the picture. Heb 11:3 reminds us that "by faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God". So, don't try to explain away a mighty act of God, just accept it by faith and be reminded of what an Awesome God we have.

Good Ol' Peter
II Cor 5:7 "For we walk by faith, not by sight."
I don't know of a more interesting character in the New Testament than Peter. He is often referred to as "Impetuous Peter" because many time his motto was act now, think later. One of those instances comes while sailing across the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had sent the disciples on ahead and assured them that He would meet them on the other side. Without consideration as to how this would happen, they set sail. As they are making their way toward their destination, a storm comes up rather suddenly. This is not an unusual occurrence on this particular sea, but what was strange is that while they were fighting the storm, they saw a figure on the water that appeared to be walking. After Jesus spoke to them, to calm their fears, our guy Peter quickly says "Lord, if it is really you, let me come out there too". (paraphrased) At Jesus' bidding, Peter began to make his way to Jesus on top of the water. At some point, Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and began to sink. But, as is always the case, Jesus was right there, ready to lend a hand and they all made it safely to the other side. We are prone to question Peter's faith, because he began to sink. But, the fact of the matter is that there were still 11 men left in the boat. Why do you suppose that Peter was willing to leave the security of the boat during this storm, having, no doubt, sailed through storms like this in his past as a fisherman? I think it is because, Peter understood a very valuable lesson - regardless of what is going on around you, the safest place to be is the nearest to God. As you face the storms in your life, make sure that you seek out the presence of God and get just as close as you can.

Its The Same Thing Only Different
Psa 139:14 "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are Thy works; and that my soul knowth right well."
I am astounded at Creation. Especially the human body. How anyone could believe that from a big bang in space man has evolved into the intricate details of the body in which we live, is beyond me. One of the things that I find so amazing is how similar we are, one with another, yet so very different. We all have 2 eyes, 2 ears, a nose and a mouth on our face. But, we syre don't look the same! And most of what makes the difference in our appearance is hidden from the naked eye. For instance, we say that a person has high cheek bones, or a chubby face. We see someone whose features reflect their ethnic background or someone who has allowed a Doctor to go beneath the skin and make alterations. But, with all of these subtle differences, there are a few things that are very much the same. We all come into this world the same way - birth. We will all leave this world the same way - death. And, again, it is that which cannot be seen with the naked eye that makes the difference. We are all born into this world with a sin nature that has separated us from God and brought about condemnation. John 3:16-19. Because of this condition, God in His Great Love for man, sent His Son to die for man on the cross of Calvary to pay man's sin debt. If a person remains in unbelief they will spend all of eternity in hell. But, if they will believe on Jesus and accept His free gift of Salvation, they will be in Heaven forever. As you look around you, we are all the same, only different and Jesus is what makes the difference. Has He made a difference in your life?

Some Strange Sayings
II Tim 2:15 "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth."
Since my calling as a Pastor is to use words, I am a word person. I pay close attention to the words people choose. I was taught a long time ago in college how important good grammar is and try my best to use it. I also like the use of puns in humor and catchy sayings. One in particular goes like this - "the more you know, the more you know you don't know" . I realize that it takes a moment to soak in, but it has such a good message to it. Sometimes we get the idea that we have a pretty good handle on a subject only to find out we really don't know as much about it as we think we do. Take life, for instance. Things seem to be going well and we begin to think we have it all figured out. Then God decides to drop something else into the mix. And, once again, we find there is so much more to learn. I like what one person said " by the time I have all the answers, I have forgotten the questions". God's Word is another prime example. If you have been in Church for a lot of years, you are probably very familiar with the most popular Bible stories and if someone asks, you are able to take them right to the passage. That is a good thing. But there is something else that is even better. We need to know more than just what the Bible says, we need to know what it means. It just amazes me how that we can read over a very familiar verse and all of a sudden, God gives us another jewel that we had never seen before. Not another interpretation, just another application. So, don't be in a hurry to read over those areas that you know so well without deep consideration. God may have a nugget of gold just waiting below the surface. We really don't know as much as we think we do.

What's In A Building
Matt 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven."
Having had the opportunity to be involved in building programs over the years, I am always amazed at the craftsmanship that some people have. When you enter a new building you can see the intricate design and the ornate woodwork that seems to jump out at you. You can be stunned by the beauty of the choice of paint colors and personal touches that the new owners have added. But, none of that would be possible if it were not for those who poured the foundation or put up the studs for the walls. Those areas of expertise and labor that never get seen by the new tenant because they become covered over with the beautiful things that finish that structure. Bare stud walls are by no means as beautiful as the finished product, but they are just as needful. As a matter of fact, without them there would be no building. Here is my point. There are a lot of people who labor in the Church whose jobs are never seen by the average person. But, those jobs are of great necessity to the overall mission and ministry of the Church. Some areas of service seem to stand out more because they are in the public eye. But, without those who tirelessly give of themselves in the "background", out of site, our service to God would be greatly hindered. I want to say a very special thank you to all those wall builders who do not seem to get the recognition and appreciation that they deserve. God knows of your service to Him and your reward is coming. In Matt 6 Jesus speaks of the pious religious acts of the Pharisees and says "they have their reward". They seek the praise of man and that is all they get. He then goes on to say that we should pray and give in secret and God will reward us openly. So, keep up the good work for God and know that we appreciate you labor of love.

Someone Is Watching You
Rom 14:7-8 "For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. "
Someone has long ago coined the phrase "no man is an island" and we must presume that what he meant by this statement is that what we do is seen by others and effects others. It is a very simple statement, yet very profound. If we could just grasp the fulness of its meaning it could and would change our lives, and for the good. I think we would be amazed at just how many people are watching us on a daily basis. Some that you work with and some that just happen to see you and know who you are. Then there are those that you come in contact with who don't have a clue who you are, but what you do can impact their day. I like the insurance commercial that aired for quite some time where a lady stopped a man from walking out into the street. Her actions were observed by someone in the car who later did something that was seen by someone else, and you get the picture. You never know what your smile and greeting does to a person that is having a really bad day. Peter reminds us that as a chosen people, we are to be peculiar, or different from the world, that we might show forth praise to God. I Peter 2:9. You and I, as the Church, are the body of Christ. The world cannot see Jesus in the flesh because He has ascended up into Heaven. In order for a lost world to see the Love of God it will be through us. And it seems as if the world is watching us in the most inoppurtune times. It is important that we realize our actions during our everyday activities can attract people to Christ or lead them to say "if that is being a Christian, I don't want anything to do with it". And by the way, even if you are all alone - God is watching you.

What About Your Bible?
II Tim 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteounenss."
As you spend time reading the Bible you find out just how unique a book it really is. Some people begin reading it as just a "history" type book, because it records historical events from the very beginning of time. Some people begin to read it because it is a "religious" book, and we are by our very nature religious beings. Most who do this are trying to find themselves and they become frustrated, because the book isn't about them. Then there are those, who realize that it is a "Divinely Inspired" book, so they are looking for Godly instruction for life. But, what makes this wonderful book so special is that even though it contains these elements, it is in fact, God's Divine revelation of Himself and His plan for mankind. All of the wonderful attributes of God are evident in the pages of the Bible. The reality of God's Love and Mercy to fallen man becomes increasingly evident with each page read. The Truth of Who God is pierces even into the hardest of hearts, so that all men stand without excuse before Almighty God. So, next time you pick up your Bible, make sure you see God. Spend more time seeing what God wants to show you and less time looking for what you want to see. You will be glad that you did.

You Make The Choice
Rom 10:13 "For, whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Have you ever notice how that when you begin to study some subjects, it just seems to open up a wide variety of questions? So it is with the subject of "predestination". It usually brings up a whole lot of "what about...?" Anytime you begin to dig deeply into scripture there are going to be some points where you be can only speculate. Some people speculate because the Bible just doesn't tell us what we want to know. Some people speculate because they just haven't found the answer and are too lazy to search for it. There are those that loudly proclaim that God had predestined some to go to Heaven, while other have no option but to spend eternity in the pits of hell. I have talked with a good number of people that hold to the doctrine of election and that only the elect are in Heaven. But, I have never met a person who believes that, that would say they are of the "unelect". If that were the case, then they could blame God for perishing in the lake of fire eternally. But, the simple truth is this - that you were born into this world with a sin nature that has separated you from God. As a result, you are on your way to hell. God, in His great love and mercy, provided a way to escape that punishment. It is through the sacrificial death of His only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Now, He did not force Heaven upon you any more that He would force hell upon someone. But, He did make it available to you. From that point on - the choice is up to you. John recorded Jesus' words in John 3:18 where He said "he that believeth is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already...". By the way, you don't choose hell, you are already going there. Your only choice is to choose Heaven. No choice is a "no" choice. But, you make the choice.

All Roads Or One Road?
Many years ago, for whatever reason, someone coined the phrase "all roads lead to Chicago". Maybe he was trying to promote the windy city or maybe he actually thought that the statement was true. The reason I mention this is because the same idea has been applied to getting to Heaven. How many times have we heard the statement, "well, we're all trying to get to Heaven in our own way"? If you want to dispute the claim that all roads lead to Chicago, all you need do is open a road map. Not only will you see that there are hundreds of roads throughout the USA that do not come anywhere near Chicago, but will also see there are roads within the state, very close to Chicago, that will actually take you around the area, never to arrive. Obviously, the same thing is true with going to Heaven. If you want to dispute the claim that all ways will take you to Heaven all you need do is open the Bible and read where Jesus said "I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by Me". John 14:6. Notice that Jesus did not say that He was "a" way, but "the" way. He is not one of many ways that will get you there if you only believe hard enough. But, instead, He proclaims that He is the only way and any other way will never get you there. No one, who truly believes in hell wants to go there. No one, who truly believes in Heaven wants to miss it. Sadly, far too many will be duped into believing a lie and try to work their way or join a cult, or rely upon their "religion", only to find out in the end, there is only one way - It is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. All roads do not lead to Chicago and all ways will not get you to Heaven.

Basis For Belief
I was talking with a man some time ago, that was making some rather strange statements about what he believed about Heaven, hell and the Church. I only had a couple of minutes to share some truths with him and to ask him what he based his belief upon. He had nothing. "It is just what I believe" was all he could respond. My guess is, he didn't go to Church nor did he read the Bible, yet he had established some firm convictions (in his own mind) about Bible doctrine. Now, before we begin to discredit this man, the obvious question to us is do we have Biblical basis for what we believe. Most people, though certainly not all, continue on in the religion or denomination into which they were born. My parents were Baptist, so I am a Baptist, type thing. And since they have been raised in the Baptist Church, they have a pretty good understanding of what "Baptist" believe. But, when asked why they believe what they do and to show the proof of it in scripture, they are dumbfounded. Several years ago, I would occasionally have doctrinal discussions with my aunt that belongs to the Mormon church. When she could not give me a reason for what she believed, her reply was "well, that is what you Baptists believe". Let me say, without hesitation, I am proud to be a Baptist, but I do not discuss Baptist doctrine, I discuss Bible doctrine. I just happen to believe that they are one and the same. Now, my question to you is not just "do you know what you believe?", but what is the basis for your belief?

It Sure Feels Good To Get Better
John 11:4 "When Jesus heard that He said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God..."
I have recently suffered from a bout of vertigo - dizziness. For those of you who have ever had it, you know how terrible it is. It isn't painful, just miserable. It is an awful feeling and there really isn't much you can do for it. It just takes time. I was thinking about how similar that particular sickness is with sin that is in our life. When the Holy Spirit begins to convict you of sin, it is a very, very miserable feeling. Just the idea of being separated from such a Loving and Holy God, because we have disobeyed Him, is horrible. Now, being a typical man, when I get sick, I figure that I will eventually get better by myself. I don't need to pay a Dr. to tell me I am sick. Sure, I know that he can also tell me what to do to get better, but my rationale tells me that I can figure that out by myself. Time will make it all better, right? And so it is when we have sin in our lives. We think that we can make what ever adjustments that need to be made and all will be OK. Not, so! The Great Physician, God Himself, has the remedy. It is called confession. I John 1:9 tells us that "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness." What a prescription! By the way, the Dr. did give me a prescription for some medicine to help ease the nausea while time passed. And, just like when I truly confess my sin and know that my gracious God has forgiven me, it sure does feel good to get better. You don't have to continue to suffer, regardless of the ailment. He wants to make it all better. Give Him a chance.

God, Did You Really Say That?
James 1:22 "But be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."
As I began reading through the Bible again this year, I came to the passage in Gen 3 where the serpent comes to Eve to entice her to eat of the forbidden fruit. I have often wondered why he was so determined for her to eat that which was banned by God. What was in it for him? The only thing that I could come up with is that "misery loves company". Since he had been banished from the good graces of God, he wanted others to join him. So, how did he go about doing that? First, he simply offered the fruit to Eve. Here, take it. You'll be glad you did. Her reply was proper in that she told him that God had put this particular tree off limits to them. Every other tree was fine, but they had to leave this one alone. Then, Satan, that sly devil, (excuse the pun) replied with, did God really say that? You know, you may have just misunderstood what He was saying. Actually, we see that Eve did add some to God's instructions when she said that they weren't even allowed to touch it. Now, before we move on, it is very important that we see how simple God made His instructions to them. Here is the Tree or Knowledge of Good And Evil - DON'T EAT!!!. Here are all of the other trees and vegetables - help yourself. It can't get any simpler than that. The problem comes when we begin to analyze God's instructions rather than just apply them. We try to figure out what God meant in stead of just listening to what He said.
The entirety of God's law for man was right there in that little phrase - don't eat. God's entire instructions for us are given in His Holy Word, the Bible, and all we need do is obey. Listen to God and you will find that, yes, God did say that and He meant it. So, just go ahead and do it.

What Does A Missionary Do?
Mark 16:15 "And He said unto them, Go ye into all th world and preach the gospel unto every creature."
Most people today really don't have any idea what a missionary does. If you have had an occasion to read the life story of some of the missionaries from many years ago, you would be surprised at the difference in the work being done today. There are several reasons for the change. First, the people are different now and some of that is because of the increase in population. When modern day missions first began the missionary would sail across the sea to a port in a land with a small populace of people. They would begin walking the streets and preaching the Gospel. Now, a missionary can be most anywhere within a couple of days and with his laptop computer have a bead on exactly where he wants to begin his ministry. After all, he has spent hours researching the people and finding the best location to minister. He may then print off some fliers and begin passing them out in the neighborhoods to invite people to come. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not saying that the way it is done today is wrong. I believe that since God has blessed us with new modern technology, we need to take advantage of it. But, I think that if we are not careful, we can miss the whole purpose of going out. No matter how we go about doing it, we still have a single purpose and that is to let a lost world know that they can be saved through death of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. Oh, by the way, we don't have to go over seas to do that. We can all be missionaries to our home land. So, as a missionary, what do you do?

It's My Birthday
Eccl 3:1-2a "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the Heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die:..."
Well, today is my birthday. A day to celebrate the fact that another year has passed and God has blessed me with the privilege to stick around a while. By, the way, I am writing this days ahead of time, so in reality, I may not be here when you read this. Now, I don't mean to sound morbid or anything, but James tells us in the last few verses of chapter 4 that we have no assurance of ever seeing tomorrow. A few years ago, I preached a message on my birthday with an interesting title. It was "This birth got me into this world, but it won't get me out". Most of you recall the story of how a very intelligent man by the name of Nicodemus came to Jesus by night to get His opinion on how to get to Heaven. As a Rabbi and teacher of the Jews, I am quite sure Nicodemus had been asked this question on many occasions. Having given an answer in the past, why was he seeking an answer now? Maybe, he realized that there was something missing in his own thought process. Regardless, I don't think he got the answer from Jesus that he was expecting. I can just see him now, standing there with his mouth wide open when Jesus told him that "You must be born again" John 3:3. Without question, this was a totally new concept for Nicodemus and for the Jews in general. The understood the sacrifices of the Old Testament were symbolic of the sacrifice that was to be made when the Messiah came. But, what is this new birth. Jesus made it very plain when He said that that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. The fact that you are alive proves that you have had one birth. But it only brought you into this world. It takes the new birth to get you out.

Seeing Another Side Of The Story
Prov 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and He shall direct thy paths."
One of my favorite Old Testament stories is when Gideon was able to win the battle over the Midianites while being outnumbered 400 to 1. I am quite sure that when Gideon gathered the army of Israel together that they had no idea that the 32,000 that had come to fight were going against 135,000. Those 4 against 1 odds were bad enough, but then God pared the 32,000 down to a measly 300. As you read the story in Judges 6-8, you see how that God not only hand picked Gideon, but also the 300 that He would use to defeat this massive army that stood before them. He gave them the strategy that would allow them to prevail without loosing so much as a man. That is quite a story, but the other side of the story is more amazing than that. How did Gideon get only 300 men to follow him into battle against unbelievable odds? If you recall, when the Angel of God came to Gideon and began to explain to him what was about to transpire, Gideon quickly excused himself from consideration explaining that he was the least of his family, which was the least of all the families of Israel. Now, if he believed that, don't you know that the soldiers that were to follow him into battle also believed that? Part of the weeding out process that God used to get to the 300 number was that He allowed any to go home that were afraid. We know there were many more than 32,000 soldiers in Israel's army, so these that came must have been courageous men. Yet, 22,000 left when given the opportunity. Could it be that they were afraid to follow Gideon rather than afraid to fight the Midianites? Maybe. But, there was something about these 300, whom God chose to use, that made them stick with Gideon to accomplish this seemingly impossible task. What was it? I think it was that these men knew they weren't just following Gideon, but that they were following Gideon, who was following God. If you look in chapter 6 of Judges, you will see that Gideon asked for more than one sign. He wanted to be sure of the "messenger"(vs 13-22) and the "message". (vs 36-40) When we get the Who part down, the what seems completely doable. Like Gideon, these 300 put their confidence in God not in man and the outcome was such that God was glorified. And that is the other side of the story.

Time Will Pass And So Will We
Rom 14:7-8 "For none of us liveth unto himself and no man dieth unto himself. For whether we life, we live unto the Lord and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we therefore or die, we are the Lord's."
Someone once said that there are only two things for sure in this world - death & taxes. Well, some people are able to get out of paying taxes, but no one is able to escape death. Heb 9:27 says "It is appointed unto man, once to die. After that the judgement". During my time as a minister I have had the privilege to be a part of many many funerals. Some people that I was very close to and some that I didn't even know. But, all of these people had an impact on the lives of those that knew them. They may have made a good impression or they made have made a bad impression, but their life effected another. The same is true with those people who lived 100 years ago, or 200 years ago. But, we don't have any idea who they are or what their life was like. They may very well have left quite a legacy behind them. A legacy that continued on for a season, yet has no bearing on our lives today. I don't mean to sound like our lives don't amount to anything after we are gone, because that is far from the truth. My point though, is that our legacy, like those who have come before us, will soon pass - just as we will. In the whole scheme of things we will touch the lives of only a very small number of people while we live and after we are gone. But, God has given us the joy, as well as the responsibility, to make a difference in those lives. We will either show them the way to the glories of Heaven through Jesus Christ, or we will lead them down the road of destruction and condemnation in hell. Another familiar quote says "tis only one life and soon twill pass. Only what's done for Christ will last" We should not live so that we will be remembered, we should be remembered because we have lived. Because time will pass and so will we.

Right On Time!
Psa 40:1 "I waited patiently for the Lord, and He inclined unto me and heard my cry."
As a young boy, my dad taught me to be prompt. If I am late I can guarantee you that something completely unexpected has happened to prevent me from being on time. I would rather be an hour early than to be one minute late. Now, not everyone is like that I know. Some people make a point of being "fashionably late". I never understood that term. Late is late and that is never a good thing. To me, it is as if the one dragging in late is saying "I am more important than you, so you can wait on me". That thought may never enter his mind, but it sure seems that way to me. Some people don't want to be late, but they don't want to arrive early either. They set their departure time to come rushing in just at the last second. You are wondering if they are ever going to be there. I know, you saying "it's getting late, get to the point". Okay, here it is. God, is always right on time. Not one second late, not one second early. We can't be that way, because we do not have control of the situations, but God does. He knows exactly when the best time is for Him to show Himself faithful. When we have specific needs that are based upon a deadline, we worry and fret, wondering if we will be able to meet our targeted time frame. We want that need met early, so we can relax a bit. God wants us to trust Him to the end and not try to work out the details by ourselves. Waiting on God is resting time. That is why the prophet Isaiah could say "they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength". Isa 40:31 So, when you find yourself between a rock and a hard place, just take it easy. Help is on the way and will be there right on time.

I Am So Blessed
Job 42:12 "So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning...".
I was telling our Church a while back about how very blessed I have been in this life. I was born into a family that soon became a Christian home and I was raised in Church, along with my brother and sister. We weren't sent to Church, we were taken to Church. I was raised in a small farming town without all of the pressures of the big city and large school systems. I have always loved sports and God allowed me to be able to participate from my childhood even until now, and share that love with my children. God brought a wonderful, beautiful, intelligent and very talented woman into my life and privileged me with the opportunity to make her my wife. Later, God permitted me to be a part of His ministry in the pastorate for almost 30 years and that wonderful wife has truly been an asset beyond compare. Now, before you think that I am bragging, let me assure you I am not. To me, this is one of the greatest explanations of "Grace" that I could ever begin to express. I know just how unworthy I am to receive such bounty! Then, I think of Heaven and I realize that with all that God has given here on this sin tainted earth, it does not even begin to compare to what lies ahead. Paul wrote in Eph 2:8 "For by Grace are you saved...". We must accept that gracious gift of Salvation by faith, but we understand that it is unmerited on our part. I don't know what your life has been like, but I can tell you this without reservation, if you are on your way to Heaven at the close of this life, you too are so blessed. Take a moment and thank God for that. It is the season for Thanksgiving.

Hello, Is Anybody Home In There?
I Cor 10:1 "Moreover, brethren, I would not that you should be ignorant...".
Sometimes we just don't get it! Let me illustrate. As the story goes, an old farmer and his wife had been married for over 30 years, but things just weren't going well so she convinced him to go with her to counseling. Immediately upon beginning the session, the counselor asked the old farmer when was the last time he told his wife that he loved her or showed her any affection? Quickly, he replied "I told her I loved her the day we got married. If I change my mind, I let her know". The counselor said "I think I know how to solve this problem very simply". With that he got up, walked over to the farmer's wife and planted a big ol' kiss on her. He turned to the farmer and said, 'now she needs that 7 days a week". The old farmer thought for a minute and said "I can get her here on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but she'll have to get her own way the rest of the time". As we chuckle at how silly that would be if it were to actually happen, the reality is far too often it does happen. We understand exactly what the counselor was trying to say and laugh because of how the old farmer took it. But, don't we find ourselves occasionally acting the same way when God speaks so clearly to us through His Word and His messenger? God doesn't want us to miss what He is saying, so He makes it very plain. We usually take it wrong, because we don't want to take it as He would have us to. Just as the old farmer didn't want to kiss his wife everyday, we don't want to do as God bids us. I can just see God seated there on His throne saying "hello, is anybody home in there"?
It's Just Tuesday.
Psa 8:4 "What is man that Thou are mindful of him? And the son of man that Thou visitest him?"
Today is just Tuesday. You know, one of the overlooked days of the week. We refer to Mondays, usually in a negative way, and we say that Weds. is "hump day" since we are now on the down hill side of the week And of course, there is good old Friday, which is the unofficial start of the weekend. But what about Tuesday? Well, its just Tuesday. That is really all we can say. Or is it? Sometimes we use that little word "just" to de-emphasize something that really shouldn't be. For instance, a woman who stays home to take care of her children often is referred to as "just a housewife". Now, that mother and wife knows that to be just a housewife is a very taxing and extremely important job. As a matter of fact, in today's world view, to be only a housewife and mother, without working a full time job is a very rare occupation. It should be honored rather than de-emphasized. There are other areas, too, where man has taken away the, so called importance, of a lesser glorified job or one that isn't in the spotlight. The one factor of these jobs is that they are usually of great importance in the grand scheme of things. For instance, the CEO gets the praise while the janitor or maintenance personnel are often forgotten, until something needs cleaning or is broken. My point is this, there are no "justs" with God. We are His Creation and He made us as we are. If you are His Child through His saving Grace, then you are a Child of the King - and that carries a great deal of prestige, regardless of what you do in His Kingdom. No, its not just Tues. , it is TUESDAY!

Some Questions Just Don't Need To Be Asked
Heb 10:25 "Not forsaking the assembling of yourselves together, as the manner of some is..."
"It's Sunday, what shall we do today?" This is a question that bothered me for a long time. I was blessed to be raised in a Christian home and from the time that my parents received Christ as their Lord and Savior, that was never a point of consideration. We got up on Sunday and got ready for Church just like my dad got up on Monday and got ready for work, or we got up and got ready for school. Once I became a Pastor, the inconsistency of people became more and more evident. What bothered me was that people would actually discuss whether they would go or not. They often would then decide, not today, maybe next week. Now, here is what bothers me today. People don't discuss it - they just don't come. Before, it was at least a consideration, but now the thought of Church is the furthest thing from their minds.
So, why is it so important to go to Church faithfully? For a lost person, it is important, because that is where you can hear the Gospel and get saved. For the Christian it is important for a number of reasons. Church is where you can come out of the world and worldly people and have fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Church is the place where you can come and praise God for all He has done for you during the past week. Church is the place where you can learn more about God, which will increase your faith in Him. It is also the place where you can obey God in the giving of your tithes and offerings so He can bless you in return. By the way, to choose not to go to Church is to disobey God and keeps you from being blessed. Okay, lets try this again - It's Sunday, what shall we do?

Why Does It Have To Be So Windy?
Psa 78:6 "He caused the East wind to blow in the heaven: and by His power He brought in the South wind."
There is so much about this old world that we still don't understand. The more I look into it the more it proves the old adage "the more you know, the more you know you don't know". Living here in Kansas, I have learned that anything less that about 40 mph is just a slight breeze. The wind is something that I had to get accustomed to when we moved here. Sure, there has always been wind wherever we have lived, but nothing like it is here. So, it got me to thinking. Yes, thinking. Where does the wind come from and where does it go? I know that it has something to do with the high pressures and the low pressures and the jet stream and all kinds of other things that I don't understand. But, why do we have to endure the wind, anyway? Okay, I am through complaining. Because the wind is really very valuable. We can now harness the wind and develop electricity. For hundreds of years the wind has been used to pump water or other uses of the wind mill. God uses the wind to stir the waters in ponds and lakes. The wind also cleans the earth by blowing away the debris, like the leaves from my neighbors yard into mine. It is those high strong winds that allows the eagle to lazily soar in the sky for hours at a time. You can't see the wind, but there is no doubt it is very real. It is like the presence of God. Yes, that's it, like the presence of God. A constant reminder that even though I can't see God He is always there and occasionally I fell His tender touch. So, go ahead and blow wind. Remind me again and again that my God is real and He is real close.

I Can, Can't I?
I Cor 1:27 "But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty."
I was doing some reading about when God called Moses to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. The thought crossed my mind that since Moses was saved from Pharaoh as a child and raised in Pharaoh's house to prepare him for God's call on his life, that he should have know that at some point God was going to come calling. We don't know what was going on in Moses' life when he fled to the wilderness and spent the next 40 years tending his father-in-law's sheep, but could it have been that he was trying to run and hide? We have no idea what Moses may have been thinking when he saw the burning bush and heard the voice of God, but could he have thought "I've been found"? It is also interesting to me that since Moses had been born and saved for this purpose, and no doubt been told that by his parents growing up, that Moses was so quick to make excuses why he couldn't do it. If you will notice in Ex 3 & 4, Moses gives 4 reasons why he is not the man for the job. Man has an element of pride about him and doesn't like to admit that there may actually be something that he can't do. Isn't it amazing how that "I am a pretty capable guy, until I need to be incapable, so as to not be able to do something that I don't really want to do in the first place". (Did I really say that?) But God gave him one good reason why he was the man for the job and that was simply because God said "I will be with you and would empower you to do it". Later, Paul would explain it like this "I can do all things through Christ which strengthenth me" Phil 4:13. So, when we realize that God has something for us to do, remember, we can do it. No excuses now.

God Is So Good
Psa 73:1 "Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart."
We are so blessed of God that we have become somewhat like Israel in the Old Testament. God had warned Israel against accepting the blessings of God without gratitude and becoming a nation of expectations. He told them that there would come a day when His blessings on them would become so routine that they would forget Him. And it came! And it has come! When was the last time that you woke up and just thanked God for being alive? We go to sleep at night expecting to wake up the next morning. When was the last time that you took a moment to count your blessings and tell God how much you love and appreciate all that He does for you? Even with all of our ailments, we are still much better off than most people. We may live from pay check to pay check, but at least there is a pay check coming in. You may not have the fanciest house on the block, but you do have a roof over your head and a promise of a mansion when the Carpenter of the ages has it finished. We sing a song "Count Your Blessings" but that is about as far as it goes, just singing about it. We serve a God Who loves us and cares for us. If nothing else, thank Him that you aren't in some cult or other religion that worships an idol made by man. Our God is soooooooo good.

Which Are You?
Mark 16:15 "And He said unto them, go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature."
October is our Missions Emphasis Month. I really love it because it puts the emphasis back where it needs to be - proclaiming the Gospel. It is also a time when we hang flags from all of our missionary countries to remind us of our outreach into the world. As we think about missions, I am always reminded of a simple saying that I heard many years ago. It is so profound and yet so very easy to understand. It goes as follows "Every person is either a missionary or a mission field". Some would quickly say that God has not called them to go to any foreign country and preach to the people over there. Oh, but He has. When we got saved, we became citizens of a new kingdom, the Kingdom of God. As such, we are Ambassadors for Christ with the appointment to proclaim the good news that Jesus Saves, to all who will listen. God may not have called you to go across the seas, but He has called you to go across the street. Jesus told the disciples, just before He ascended up into Heaven, that they would receive power - that power being the indwelling of the Holy Spirit - and would be His witnesses all over the world. Some would stay in Jerusalem, and some would depart to the uttermost parts of the world. But, all would be His witness. Here is the key to that statement. If we are not being a missionary, then we really need for someone else to come and minister to us about our responsibility as a Christian. Which means, we become a mission field. So, the question comes again, which are you?

Make A Joyful Noise Part 2
Psa 100:1 "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands."
Let's go back to Psa 100 and the thought of making a joyful noise. As we have seen in the past, most of the time our mind goes toward singing. Unfortunately, too much of what is called joyful noise today is more of an ungodly racket. But, I think there are some others noises that God enjoys. Later in the Psalm it says we are to enter into His courts with praise. I liken that to coming to Church. Most churches have a squeaky front door. Personally, I like that. That sound tells us that someone is entering the building. They are coming in to fellowship with the brethren and worship the Lord. I think God likes that sound as well. I am confident that God loves the sound of service as well. Whatever it is that He has called you to do, do it with gusto and make a joyful noise as you do. Even the quietness of prayer rings loud in the ears of our Heavenly Father as we bring our petitions before Him. Yet another, joyful noise. The sound of someone sharing the Gospel with a lost soul is music to God's ears. And the soft cry from the heart of a penitent sinner brings about shouts in Heaven. I hope you understand what I am getting at and can carry this thought further as you make a joyful noise unto our God. Not only will it be pleasing unto Him, it will do wonders for your heart. There are enough quiet Christians in the world. Let's get out a make some noise for the Lord.

Being Independent
Gal 5:1 "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. "
Tomorrow is the 4th of July - Independence Day. It is the anniversary of the day that our wonderful country declared it's independence from the mother country over 200 years ago. Columbus had found this land and many people had come to begin settling into and developing it into a place of habitation. A place where they could enjoy the bounty of the harvest and the beauty of their new surroundings. Then, another King decided that his country should be the one to rule this new land. Many battles ensued as these new settlers fought to gain their freedom. They had chosen to leave this old country because of the religious oppression that they had to suffer and came here so that they could worship God as He led them, not as they were told. The rest is history, as they say, and you and I are blessed to live in this great nation. But, once again, the battle is raging and a former prince is trying to take away our freedoms. That prince is the devil, the prince of the power of the air. (Eph 2:2) He is polluting the Word with the new "interpretations" and "versions". He is diluting the Word with preachers who will not proclaim the unbiased truth that can set men free. Each year, we celebrate our national independence on July 4th. We celebrate, but we do not realize that we are far less free today that we ever have been. Each year, you should celebrate the day that you were saved and freed from the oppression of sin and the devil. Celebrate, but make sure that you are not becoming entangled again in that yoke of bondage to the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. If you are not thankful for your freedom today, you will wish you had it tomorrow.

We Are All The Same Just Different
I Sam 16:7b "... for the Lord looketh not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart."
That kind of sounds like a Yogism, doesn't it. You know, that sage old philosopher Yogi Berra. But, there is so much truth in it. When we look at people, in many cases, you can readily tell their heritage - if they are Asian, Polynesian, African, etc. Even those of the same ethnic background have striking similarities, yet vast differences in culture, language and sometimes even appearance. It has always amazed me that we all have 2 eyes, a nose and 2 ears, but the slight changes in size and location on the face and head alters the look completely. We also have our own ideas, as we look at each other, as to what looks good and what doesn't. Because of these outward differences, we are prone to like some and dislike others based upon what we see on the exterior. We mentioned earlier that there are ethnic differences, but in reality we can all trace our heritage back to Noah, and then from there back to Adam. My point is this. With all of these differences and similarities there are some things that are "exactly" the same regardless of time or race. Each of us was born (created by God) with a body, a soul and a spirit. Each of us was born having inherited a sin nature from Adam and that sin nature has separated us from God. Each of us is completely incapable of reconciling that great gulf of separation on our own. But, God, who looks beyond the exterior to the heart of man and his problem, has provided a means by which "all" can be saved. It is the shed blood of Jesus Christ. For those of us who have been redeemed, it would do us well to also look beyond what we see and through the eyes of faith, just see a lost soul needing to be saved. Yes, we are very different, but also very much the same.

Woe Is Me!
Rom 8:28 "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose."
As a child I remember hearing a little song that described the feelings of self pity and despair. It went something like this "Everybody hates me, nobody loves me. I'm going to eat some worms. Great big fat ones, little bitty skinny ones. Oh, how they wiggle and squirm". Does it seem like sometimes the only party we ever get invited to is our own pity party? And, when we look at our situation, we do so through a very thick magnifying glass. Okay, so what brought all of this on? I am glad you asked. I just got an email some time ago from a fellow Kansas pastor that has been suffering for quite a while with back problems. He just had surgery and while they had him opened up they found a mass growing that they removed. While he was recovering from the surgery he got a call that his daughter, who is away in school, was having another one of her seizures. There is more, but I think you get the point. But, through all of this he continues to praise God for being in control of the situation and knows that the only reason that God would allow this to happen is so that they can Glory and Honor Him in it. I don't know what I would do if I were facing the same situation, but God does. And maybe that is the reason that my problems now don't seem nearly as devastating as they were before. I have no idea what may be "overwhelming" you today, but can you Glory and Honor God through it all? Otherwise, it is simply back to woe is me.

Give Yourself A Chance To Win
I Cor 9:24 "Know ye not that they which run in a race run all,but only one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain."
I am a big sports fan, though maybe not as much now as I used to be. And, being the fan that I am, I, too, am a wonderful Monday morning quarterback. For those who may not know what that is, that is a person who picks apart the coaches decisions on Monday morning without all of the pressure of the game on his shoulders. In football, after a touchdown, you have the option to kick an extra point or go for a 2 point conversion. Sometimes, at the end of a game a coach will have to decide whether he wants to get 1 point and go into overtime to try to win, or if he puts everything on the line and attempts a most difficult 2 point conversion for the win right now. Whether they go for it and make it or play it safe, there are always going to be those who think the other was a much better choice. If the play is unsuccessful and the team loses, then the argument is "give yourself a chance to win" in overtime. As I was thinking about that over the weekend, I thought of how many Christians are faced with difficulties in life, but do not give themselves a chance to win. Rather than turn to God and His Word for advice, they try to rationalize or analyze the situation in their own mind to come up with a solution. Rather than get back into Church, so they have the support of their brothers & sisters in Christ, they allow pride to keep them away. Rather than seek the wisdom of God to make the right decisions they stumble along wondering why things just don't seem to get any better. As I recall, our God has never lost a battle or ever been defeated in any way, and yet we think we can handle the situation better than He can. My point is really very simple. When you find yourself at the end of the game, so to speak, give yourself a chance to win, by seeking the Lord. That is always going to be the best play. You will come out a winner.

But The Weatherman Said...
Matt 16:2-3 "He answered and said unto them, when it is evening ye say that it will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather today: for the sky is foul and lowering. O, ye hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times."
How would you like to be a weatherman? I have always thought that being a meteorologist would be rather exciting. Now, I have made a distinction between being a weatherman and a meteorologist. Because the weatherman, who tells people what the weather is going to be, is also the one who gets the blame when it isn't. Let's face it, there is really only one person who knows what it is going to be like tomorrow or the next few days and that is God Himself. For everyone else, it is nothing more than an educated guess. It has amused me, since we have been here in Kansas, how that the different broadcasts can be as much as 10 degrees different in their forecasts. I've been saying that if you don't like the forecast, just change channels until you find one that you do like. Now, before we get too judgemental about these poor guys in a no win situation, let's realize that there are those who also try to predict the coming of the Lord and His soon return to gather His Church at the rapture. And, they are just as much in the dark as the meteorologists are. Jesus told the Pharisees of His day that they could look at the sky and tell what could happen, but they just couldn't tell when. We, too, can look at the evidence around us and know that something is going to have to change very soon. Jesus said that as it was in the days of Noah, so it shall be at His return. He described those days of eating and drinking without any cause for concern about the judgement to come. Well, I think those days have arrived. As I look outside to day, the clouds are gray and we have overcast skies - it just might rain. As I look around at the world and see the ungodliness and uncaring - it just might be today. Are you ready if it rains? More importantly, are you ready if He comes again.

We Can Be So Dumb
I Cor 10:1a "Moreover, brethren, I would not that you should be ignorant..."
The more I learn about this body that God has given to us, the more amazed I am. I am always just in awe of the eyes and how we can see. I just don't understand how that could work. But lately the part of the anatomy that I can't figure out is the brain. I remember a long time ago hearing that the average person only uses 10 % of brain capabilities. My first thought is why? If we can do what we do with that small amount, just think what we could do if we used more. But, I have to admit, I am now beginning to wonder if some people even use that much. As you look around and observe decisions that are being made you just have to step back and say "whoa, where did that come from"? How is it that a person can choose to use drugs or alcohol to the point of passing out, wake up with hangover that feels like a diesel truck is running over their head, and then say they had a great time the night before? Of course, they don't remember it. How can a man throw away years of happiness with the wife of his youth, for a moment of passion? Where is the logic in that. How is it that a person can face the truth that he is doomed for hell, not because of anything that he has done, but simply because he was born in sin and then refuse the only escape available to him through Jesus Christ. It just doesn't make much sense does it? Now, before you begin to say "amen, preacher, you tell them", think about some of the bonehead decisions you have made. Then thank God that He protected you from yourself and remember that we can be so dumb. But, as God's child we can make better choices in life and that is a very good thing.

Just How Hot Is It?
Luke 16:23-24 "And in Hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame."
Man will go to great lengths to take away from the truth of something that they don't want to believe. No one wants to think that they are on their way to hell when they die. If you ask someone of their eternal destiny they usually have a quick response of "I hope I am going to Heaven", or "I don't think God would send anyone to hell". They even try to minimize the severity of hell. Like so many other places, it gets pretty warm here in Kansas in the summer time. And sometimes people like to use the phrase "hot as hell", but they really have no idea just how hot hell can be. Nor do they understand the intense agony that those in hell are suffering right now. They have no concept of the reality that, that unbearable heat will continue for eternity. With the coming of Sept. and Oct. we will begin to see some relief - not so in Hell. They will hear the terrifying screams of others in the blackness of hell forever. And, they will have to live with the understanding that they are forever separated from the Loving God Who provided a means to escape such punishment. Yes, Kansas can be very hot and almost unbearable at times, but it doesn't even begin to compare to hell.

A New Day
James 4:14a "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow..."
As I woke up this morning the thought came to me that this is a brand new day. Yesterday, with all of its prospects, has come and gone. Even though this is a unique day, I have never experienced it before I have the joy in knowing that Eternal, Omniscient God knows all about it.
As I began the day, I went outside to get the paper. The sun was just coming up and the birds were beginning to sing. It was pleasant out with just a light breeze. But, I know, that is about to change. The forecast for today is rain with the possibility of thunderstorms. I don't know when, I don't where, I only know that they are coming. So it is in life. There are time when all seems to be going well and we are experiencing the joys of life - then the rain starts to fall. It seems that our whole world is crashing down upon us. With all of the uncertainties, here is a constant "This is the day which the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it" Psa 118:24. God made the day and all of the events that will occur and He did it just for me, knowing what I need and that with His help, there is nothing that I can't make it through. At the end of the day, I rest. Because, tomorrow is a new day.

No Fool Like An Old Fool
Matt 7:26 "And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:"
Okay, before you turn me off, this isn't about those of us who have made our way down the path of time - it simply refers to experience. So, we could say it like this "there is no fool, like an experienced fool". Now, does that sound better? Anyway, we really can't get the message without understanding the meaning of the word "fool". We commonly think of a fool as one without much common sense and there is some truth to that. But, when we think in terms of the Bible and what God calls a fool, well it is somewhat different. The Psalmist says "The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God". (Psa 53:1) Just as is in the King James Version of the Bible, I have put "there is" in italic. The translaters did so when certain words were need to give a continuation of thought to a particular passage of scripture. Certainly, a person who denies the existence of Holy God, is very foolish in his thinking. But, when you compare this scripture, with what Jesus said in Matt 7:26 you see that the real fool is the person who hears what God has to say and doesn't do it. Or, going back to Psa 53, we could say that the fool is the one who says "no God! I know what you are saying to me, but I am just not going to do it". Now, before we begin looking down our pious noses at someone like this, think of the many times that we have heard the preaching or teaching of God's Word on a particular subject, such as church attendance, or titheing, or Bible reading, etc, and have not responded to what God said directly to us. God so graciously allows us to hear it again and again, so that we might obey, and yet there is no change in us. How foolish is that? By the way, it gets easier every time we turn a deaf ear to God's wooing of us. So, let's not become an "experienced old fool", but instead allow God to make the corrections in life that will allow us to be blessed.

Showers Of Blessings
I Thess 5:18 "In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."
I like that old hymn "There Shall Be Showers Of Blessing" because it has so much Bible truth in it. One of the verses of the song states that these showers are sent from the Savior above. James 1:15 tells us that "every good gift and every perfect gift is from above...". This tells us the origin of our blessing - from above - and the order of our blessings - good and perfect. In other words, what we have comes from God and it is good, both to us and for us, as well as perfect. Perfect in that it is exactly what we need, though not always what we may want. It is perfect for both the time and task at hand. The prophet Malachi tells us in Chapter 3 that God wants to open the windows of Heaven and pour out a blessing upon us. What keeps us from getting that blessing? Our own disobedience! We have heard of the Indians, in the days of the old west, performing a rain dance to get the clouds to open up and release the rains. It was something that they were doing that they hoped would make a difference. It is just the opposite in this situation. What we don't do causes God to withhold His bounty toward us. I am sure you have seen those torrential rains that we would describe as "Texas toad stranglers", because they came down so hard and flooded the low lying areas. Well, that is more in line with what God really wants to do for us. He wants to open the windows of Heaven, much like He did in the days of Noah, and pour out His wonderful blessing. Why not give God a chance to rain showers of blessing? And if He doesn't, don't blame Him. Thank Him for the opportunity to make things right so He can.

A Cloud Is A Cloud!
I Thess 4:16-17 "For the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: ans so shall we ever be with the Lord."
I remember as a little fellow how much fun it was to lay on the ground looking up into the sky at the different cloud formation and try to decide just what they looked like. For instance, there were some strange looking dogs floating around up there or a weird looking dragon ready to pounce upon an unsuspecting cloud that looked just like, well, I don't know, but I am sure it was something he wanted to eat. Later, when I was in high school, I had a science teacher who was overjoyed by gloomy, cloudy, rainy days. He began to teach us about those clouds - what kind they were and what they would do to the weather patters. Of all that he taught us, I remember very little. Come to think of it, I don't remember any of it. One thing I knew then that hasn't changed and that is that clouds are fascinating and in most cases, very beautiful. I still am infatuated with clouds today, but for a much different reason. I often say that I enjoy clear sunshiny days, but I always want there to be at least one cloud in the sky. Why? you ask. Because almost 2,000 years ago there was a group of believers that had gathered outside the city of Jerusalem with Jesus, who had been crucified and risen from the dead 40 days prior to this encounter. Jesus gave them some last instructions and then Acts 1 tells us that He ascended back to His rightful place in Heaven, on a cloud. Not only that, but the Angel of God that was there promised that when Jesus comes back for His Church, He will do so on a cloud. Most of us are convinced that His return could be at any moment. So, I look for a cloud and especially get excited as the sun goes down and the glory of that shining orb lends a halo around the clouds - could it be the Glory of God this time? Yes, a cloud is a cloud, but there is still going to be one very special one.

Eph 6:2 "Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;"
What a joy it is to be a father. I am so very blessed that God gave us two wonderful kids. The one downside to becoming a parent is that when the child arrives, he/she doesn't come with instructions. Now that doesn't mean that you are just on your own, because God gives us guidelines that help us along the way. For instance, He says that we are to raise them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Eph 6:4) He also gives a simple directive to the children. They are to honor their father and mother - if they want to live a long life. One thing that I have learned over the years is that you can demand that the position of the father in the home be honored, but the person has to earn that respect. So, as a father, what can be done to warrant that honor? I think there are 3 things that are necessary to be an honorable father. The first is to provide for the home. This means more than just putting food on the table and a roof over their head. It means to provide love and respect for all in the home. The second thing is to protect the home. Protect your home for physical danger and protect your home from Spiritual danger. What we need today are dads who will take a firm stand against the wiles of the devil and quit giving in to whining kids who want their way regardless of the consequences. The last thing is to prepare the children for the future. As parents, our greatest responsibility is to raise our children so they can know and do God's will for their lives. Remember, Jesus said that if a man gain the whole world and lose his soul, he has lost all. Our kids may not understand that while they are experiencing it, but in the end they will honor the father and mother who raises them right.

Saying Hello To A Friend
John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his live for his friend."
I thought it only right that I should follow up yesterday's devotional with the flip side. As I was thinking about this subject I remember hearing someone say "a stranger is just a friend that you haven't met yet". I like the idea behind that, but in reality, at least while we are here on earth, that just isn't always the case. Ah, but when we get to Heaven, now that is a different story. I often speak of being anxious to talk to Moses or Paul about how they knew exactly where God was leading them. I can't wait to hear Peter confirm what I am thinking about him, when I ask him about the first thing he thought after he said "bid me come unto thee", as Jesus was walking on the stormy sea. I feel confident that it was something like "did I really say that out loud"? No doubt, you too, have dreamed of some conversation with someone that is already there. I am also looking forward to meeting some friends that I don't even know are there. Some of my great, great grandchildren. No, I'm not that old! I mean those who were led to the Lord by someone who was told about Jesus by someone that I had the privilege to share the Gospel with. You know, those kind. Why is that so important? Because I want to take them to meet the wonderful saints of God who had a part in my salvation and say here is another of your grandkids. All of these will be wonderful. But, Proverbs tells us there is a "friend that sticketh closer than a brother". Prov 18:24 We know who that it. It is Jesus. And He is the Friend that I am so anxious to meet and to hear Him say "Hello friend, come on in".
Saying Goodbye To A Friend
Acts 20"36-38 "And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all. And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul's neck, and kissed him, sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship."
A couple of months ago I made a new friend. He and his wife visited our church and we just seem to hit it off. Maybe it is because we have so much in common or maybe it is because we have a common bond in Jesus Christ. In all honesty, I know very little about my new friend and his wife, other than the fact that they are moving away. Just when I was getting to know them and we were able to have some fellowship together, God decides to move them away. As I was thinking about this it reminded me that it isn't really goodbye, but rather just so long. I have become quite accustomed to saying "so long, see you later" in my lifetime. I left home right out of high school and have only been back on rare occasions. As God has used us in the ministry for almost 30 years, we have come to and gone from too many locations. Each of these meant saying those same words once again - "so long, see you later". It was difficult at first, because we were just getting started in life and ministry and the thought of not seeing these folks was difficult to accept. Now the years have gone by and most of those we have never seen. Hold on now, before you begin to get teary eyed, let me assure you that there is some joy in this thought. The joy is that as the years have passed by, we have all gotten that much closer to the day we will be together again in Heaven. Some of those that we have bid farewell to, such my own dad, are awaiting us in Glory. Isn't it nice to know that being saved means never having to say "goodbye". So, scratch that title at the top and lets just say "so long, see you later". I like the sound of that better anyway.

Let's Go To The Buffet
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life."
I love to go to a buffet. Surprisingly, not so much that I can eat all that I want, but more so because of the variety. I can get a little of this and a little of that and then look for something even different, if there is still some room. I mention that because one of the highlights of our missions conference is the "International Dinner" where we ask people to breakout their recipes from other countries. You know, so that we can get a good dose of international heartburn. It is always interesting to see what they come up with and always very tasty as well. One might think that we do that just to have an excuse to get together and eat. And, though there may be some truth to that, it is also a subtle reminder that these dishes represent foreign countries, where people live differently that we do. Many of them do no have the freedom that we have to even enjoy an event like this. Many of them do not have an opportunity, as we do, to hear a clear cut presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They live in a different culture with different ideas about what their future holds. They look different from us. They speak different from us. They think different from us. Yet, with all of these differences, we all have one common need in life. That, of course, is the need to be saved from our sinful nature that has separated us from a Loving and Holy God. We are privileged to know this truth and to know how to reconcile that separation. They, on the other hand, do not. As we taste their cuisine, I hope we will remember that it represents someone who is hungry for the Gospel and do our part to ease that hunger.

Always Room For One More
Gen 7:1a "And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark;..."
As I think about the wonderful grace of God that is manifested in the saving of Noah and his family, I am also reminded that so many people look at the flood and cry out that God is a hateful and vengeful God. When you look back, what you see is that man became more and more immoral and ungodly, to the point that Righteous God had to judge the unrighteousness of mankind. Some would say that because of Adam, and the fact the man had inherited a sin nature, there was no alternative but to continue in sin. But, God inspired Moses to record the genealogy of Seth in chapter 5 of Genesis and what we see in a line of people who continue to teach their children about the love of God. Even up to the time of Noah, who was a righteous man. So, the ungodly line of Cain had the testimony and example of Seth's lineage to show them how God wanted to, and would, bless those who turned to Him. Some would then say that since we see there were those who did believe in God, why must God destroy the whole world? They forget that for 120 years Noah preached to them about God's coming judgement and what they needed to do. Then when the door was opened to them, they refused until it was too late. The point is, that at one moment the door was opened to all - whosoever will. They died by their own choice. There would have been plenty of room for all who came. Just like Heaven - always room for one more. Which means there is room for you. Won't you come along?

Words Will Be Words
I Sam 3:10 "Then the Lord came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for Thy servant heareth."
It has often been said that the English language is the most difficult to learn. I can see how that would be the case when some many have such a hard time speaking it correctly and it is their native tongue. As a preacher, words are of interest to me. I also enjoy puns and using words in ways that are somewhat strange, I guess some would say. One thing that intrigues me is how you can take a sentence and verbally say it in reverse and it has a whole new meaning. Let me show you what I am talking about. Let's take the sentence "the mind is a terrible thing to waste". A very good statement, I think we would all agree. Now, let's reverse it and see what message we get. "the waist is a terrible thing to mind". Another very true statement. I know you are saying that I changed the words up a little and you are correct. But, the pronunciation is the same - remember I like puns. Another interesting thing about our English language is how that in certain regions of the country, people talk differently. They have accents that actually change the pronunciation of words. When you speak with someone like that you have to pay very close attention so that you don't miss what they are saying to you. Now, here is what I am getting to. Our God speaks every language known to man, because He speaks the language of the heart. And when God speaks to us, He makes His message very, very clear. No puns, no cliches, just plain talk that all can understand. Even when He speaks in that still small voice.
